It’s time to talk about the gopher tortoises?
or ChatGPT.
From my experience with AI, it tends to need a lot of suggesting in order to get even close to what you’re looking for. When prompting ChatGPT to tell me about the critically endangered status of the gopher tortoise I didn’t expect it to give me such accurate information, I was surprised to see it had gotten everything right for the most part.
I asked it to tell me the reason why gopher tortoises are now considered critically endangered; and while I know the answer I made sure to corroborate what ChatGPT had produced given the prompt.
The sources I checked matched for the most part, except for some quantities when it came to other animal species that are dependent on these tortoises. It also expanded some on poaching and pet trade, but there was little to no information online about that specific reason for their decline.
While I believe it can be a helpful tool to prompt ideas and outlines for writing, I feel like it took longer for me to prompt ideas to ChatGPT, check for errors, correct the errors, and then move basically everything around because the order in which it wrote everything seemed all over the place and difficult to follow. Another thing I don’t like is that it also lacks personality. I know it’s not a person, but the way it wrote the prompt was very matter of fact and almost like a list rather than an essay or blog post.
All in all, I didn’t enjoy the experience, and I think I’ll stick to good ole writing from my brain.
